C-266. “A new birth of freedom”
In concluding his Gettysburg address, Lincoln looked Forward to serving that which was being preserved. “A new birth of freedom,” he said, “that this government of the people, by the people, and for the people shall not perish from the earth.”
Why “government” rather than “nation” or “union”? Because his work, his job, was to govern. The suffix “-ment” points TO agency: agency not just of responsible person but of behavioral capability. (That government is objectified, not grasped behaviorally, is a failure of civic education.)
There was work yet to be done. Re OF, FOR, and BY.
OF: Decisions to be made with respect to direction and leadership: Political parties – their philosophies, values, platforms and leaders. No shortage of candidates. But difficult decisions. And problematic decision making technology (e.g., electoral college). Freedom FROM can become an issue under misplaced direction (e.g., tyranny or “-isms”).
FOR: Distribution of functionalities is unequal.*Found functionalities (“nature’s bounties”) are unequally distributed. Made functionalities (“empowerments”) are unequally distributed (e.g. internet access). Proprietary property owners exert dysfunctional political power (e.g., “Citizens United”). Freedom OF can be an empty promise to the unprivileged (“opportunity”). Freedom OF can be a license to individual autonomy – of independence without any commitment to interdependence, to community and union.
BY: Citizens capable of producing needed functionality.** Especially together.*** (e.g., “Toward a more perfect Union.”) With an emphasis on total needed functionality. We have been laboring ahead – not so much forward as back and forth, politically speaking – using the ratio of functionality/dysfunctionality (e.g., “good” vs. “bad”; success vs. failure) to guide us. This with the ratio of needed functionality/ functionality at >1++ (i.e., growing steadily). BY points to capability as well as to citizens, to technologies to give added capability.# Freedom TO requires realizable opportunity: the ability to make and take steps -- capability development in civic education, civic architecture, civic technology.

There is a pattern and path Forward here: The Expansion transfiguration and R-transform have given us the means to escape from the thrall of B-ness – i.e., a gift of freedom FROM. Further, the S-universe gives us a way to realize freedom TO. Now it is up to us to match this behavior as a democracy – i.e., not just free ROM, not just free OF, but free TO.
Liberty (freedom OF) is just the beginning of, the stage for, democracy (freedom TO). Democracy which requires developing the interdependence of Community and Union. Solving the behavioral problem of “We, the people,” developing an effective operating system. Developing procedural technologies to help us progress Forward.
Steps point us toward the S-universe as part of a productive Mind technology. Along with the Expansion’s principles (differentiation, extension and CEM [contingent emergent materiality]). Turning the tables on the B-universe’s (“the Universe”) backwards, upside-down and inside-out dominion over behavior.## Freeing step making and taking from the mind-binding of B-ness, B-speak, hypostatization and the relegation of behavior to the deflating “behavioral entity.”
The molecular step is key to the challenges of architecture, relevance, help, and interdependence. To the problems of relating behavioral units to each other, as in matters of timing and content. Mind and Move begin the S-universe development of the molecular step, each vested with the “Involve CEM Grasp” strength of steps.###
