Topic V: Behavioral Manifold
Development of capability, in regard to Psit and Pbeh, has taken many forms – and might yet take many more. Behavioral necessity, given partial order as the Nature of Things, continues to operate. (It, like consequentiality and discontinuity, is a behavioral constant.) Development proceeds in some, but not any particular, way.
In all cases, we see a pattern, something like a “periodic table” for behavior. It begins with need, is followed by process and then by product. Then it begins again with situational need for the product as a tool (or procedure) in a tool usage process … with then a new product … and so it goes, molecularly on and on.
There are hundreds of such developmental needs. Body capacities do not automatically translate into step capabilities — notions like talents and traits notwithstanding.
Development may take a new line (reinvention) or pursue an old line (newly invented procedures or tools to make an old tool work better). The latter may have a very long molecular history (e.g., “advances” in communication technology, weapons, formal education.)
A word such as “communication” may pertain to any or all the stages in this development – from initial need, through various processes and products, toward unattainable ideal (a refraction of need). We may thus encounter many meanings for a word: a family of them (of progeny, not just cousins). Ambiguity then frustrates definition. (Some accommodations, in particular cases, have been made – i.e., tools to make words as tools work –such as prefixes [e.g., en-] and suffixes [e.g., -ion]. But many words serve as both noun and verb.)
There are hundreds of such words (see partial list below)
Any stage in the behavioral manifold has the potential to become an impediment – and many stages have (as, for example, in cases of institutionalized adoptions of product-tool usages). But word meaning as such is a huge impediment. (Pointing is more to the point of needed capability: Points OF, FOR, AT, ABOUT, TO, etc.)
Some capabilities are so fundamental to our further development that they deserve special mention here (capitalized entries) and then are touched on in other sections for their roots in Pbeh , .
